Portals, logins, and passwords, oh my! Portals everywhere. Log in to confirm the gig this, update your profile that. It's crazy how much the industry has evolved. Who remembers the days when you had to wait almost 90 days before you got your payout ... via paper check through the mail (or am I showing my promo age, LOL). Presently, today, the norm is becoming portals. A common portal site that is becoming popular amongst promo agencies is StaffConnect. Now, although we're covering tips to optimize your StaffConnect, you can also use these tips on other portal sites that are layered like StaffConnect.

Tapping into StaffConnect's Filters

On your side of StaffConnect, there are sections on your profile that you are skipping. These sections play a huge role when Staffers use filters on their side of StaffConnect to search for promos/staff.  These filters serve as essential tools for both staff and agencies, allowing Staffers to narrow down potential candidates based on specific criteria. Each of these filters plays a critical role in ensuring that the right candidates are matched with the right opportunities. It is quite surprising to discover how many promotional workers overlook the importance of providing this essential information in their profiles. Without adequately filling in these details, your profile risks being excluded from important filter results, which can significantly diminish your chances of being selected for various promotional events. Therefore, it is highly advisable to ensure that you have these areas not only filled out but also kept up to date and reflective of your current skills and availability.

Your Profile Photo Needs To Be A Solo Photo

StaffConnect features a valuable option for promotional agencies to generate presentation .pdfs of staff members. These presentations serve multiple purposes, including showcasing you as a viable candidate, displaying the entire team roster, and highlighting your unique qualifications as the ideal choice for a specific activation. However, it is crucial to note that StaffConnect pulls the profile photo you have uploaded, which means that the image you choose can significantly impact your chances of being selected. Unfortunately, many users make the mistake of using group photos or selfies in branded attire for their profile pictures. This raises an important question: Do you think clients are interested in seeing your group photos? Or do they prefer to see you represented in a way that aligns with their brand’s image? The answer is clear; clients are looking for professional and individual representations that reflect their expectations.

To maximize your chances of making a positive impression, I strongly recommend that your profile photo be a high-quality, clear selfie of you looking cheerful and approachable. This image should be free of filters and distractions, with a simple, non-distracting background. Additionally, it is best to wear non-branded apparel to avoid any potential conflicts with the brands you may be representing. Ensure that the photo is in color, with your face centered and clearly visible. A resolution of at least 1080 x 1080 pixels is ideal to maintain clarity and professionalism. It’s essential that your photo accurately represents how you will appear at the activation. Avoid using car selfies, as they can look unprofessional compared to someone who has invested time in obtaining a quality solo picture. Moreover, refrain from wearing sunglasses, masks, or hats, and ensure that your phone is not visible in the shot, particularly in mirror selfies. While professional photography is not a requirement, it is important that the image you present aligns with how you will look during the event.

ACTIVATION Photos

Provide a variety of photos. Event photos, headshots, and/or professional photos. We have grown to know that there are times when certain activations are looking for a particular look. In addition to your regular headshot, include another headshot that reflects other looks that helped you book the activation. For example, some clients want promo workers who have the "Instagram Model" look, and another client may want a friendly face; including a few headshot options gives the Staffer more to work with. Another thing I see is tons of fashion model photos being used in profiles. If you have more fashion model photos than you do activation photos, you may want to rethink this. I'm not saying to take the fashion model photos down. I'm saying add more activation photos. Your profile is for activation gigs; for the most part, you should be displaying your ability in the promo industry. And another thing, if you put in your bio that you have 3+ years of promo experience, but only uploaded 3 photos. Yikes, hurry and upload more photos, please.

The point is to provide the promo agencies with everything they need to make it easy for the client to say yes to you.

In ConclusioN

You want to make it easy for the client to see why you were selected. Trying to debate what you think a promo agency needs in order to consider you as an option is wild. If you can't trust the agency to be honest with you, then you have a decision to make or an expectation to adjust.

Here's something to chew on: not all events are posted in portals or on social media. Some events are staffed without sending out a mass event notification. Some events are not posted on the portal. Some events are not solicited on social media. Why? Because the agency has enough promos to choose from, whose profile has all the items and info they need to move forward with booking. Make sure you are optimizing your profile to increase your probability.
